AK Scaffolding competes against the worlds best scaffolders
When our crew stepped into the arena at the SIA Scaffold Builders Competition in Las Vegas, we weren’t there as tourists. We were there as contenders representing Manchester, the UK, and Europe on the world’s biggest stage. Our mantra was simple: Build it, dismantle it, and do it better than anyone else. In this game, there is no place to hide.
Forged in Graft
Our journey to the Nevada desert didn’t start with a lucky break; it started with hard work. Following our performance at Scaff Champ 2025 in Lithuania, we were invited to the World of Concrete in Vegas to compete against the elite.
To prepare, we turned the Layher UK depot in Yorkshire into a training camp. No glamour—just endless sets of bracing, leveling, and refining sequences. We drilled until our communication was telepathic, shaving seconds off our times while refusing to compromise a single millimeter on safety. We want to thank Andy Dallas and the team at Layher for standing behind us as we prepped for the States.
More Than a Crew: A Brotherhood
What makes AK Scaffolding different isn’t just the 50+ years of experience led by our CEO Aaron King and Paul Ward. It’s the mission behind the metal.
We’ve built this company as a force for good. We specialize in second chances, actively hiring and training ex-offenders to show that your destination matters more than your origin. When we competed in Vegas, we carried those stories with us.
We also carried the memory of our fallen brother, Nathan Mallet. His flag flies at every event we attend. For us, scaffolding isn’t just a job; it’s a road to redemption and a bond of loyalty that can’t be bought.
The Rectangle of Truth
The competition deck in Vegas is what we call the “rectangle of truth.” Surrounded by 19 industry judges and thousands of spectators, we faced off against US heavyweights like Scaffold Resource and Turnkey Scaffold.
The pressure was electric. We had 15 minutes to study a complex design and 90 minutes to execute. Every ledger slammed home and every harness check was under the microscope. It wasn’t just about speed; it was about technical discipline and “controlled aggression.”
The Result: We secured 4th Place globally. For a first-time entry in this format, competing against the best refinery and high-rise crews in North America, we couldn’t be prouder. We proved that a committed crew from Manchester can hold their own against the world’s elite.
The Road Ahead
This isn’t the end—it’s just the beginning. We are treating scaffolding like the elite technical craft it is. We’re coming back stronger, sharper, and more determined to inspire the next generation of apprentices.
